Functional Art
While many of the woods used in my cutting boards are Exotic woods to fit my artistic flare and design, they are not a good fit for heavy duty commercial use. Standard commercial use boards are Hard Maple, Walnut, or maybe even Cherry. Check out my designs featuring Sugar Maple and Cherry if you’re wanting more of a heavy duty commercial use board.
The lamp designs are made with hard and soft woods and serve as “Functional Art” as well. The LED design in some pieces give off very little light, like a night light, and some can be fitted with a higher watt bulb and can be used as a side table lamp.
Disclaimer for the types of woods used
Exotic woods that I use are primarily Padauk, Purple Heart, Sapele, and Yellow Heart. Just like Walnut has a very slight chance of a reaction for people with nut allergens, there is a very small chance for people to have some irritant issues with these Exotic woods. There are plenty of domestic woods that can cause similar irritant issues as well.
Wood workers are exposed to the sawdust of the Exotic woods, which is exponentially more concerning that using a cutting board.
Exotic woods can be a bit more porous than some of the domestic woods like Cherry or Maple and because of that, they require a bit more care. It’s important to use the board conditioner frequently to help maintain the board’s water resistance as much as possible.
Applying board conditioner after washing your board with hot soapy water also helps keep the wood from becoming dry and helps prevent splintering.
